A Full Body Massage: The Benefits
Traditional Burmese Massage, also known as Myanmar Massage, or Burmese Touch, draws heavily on Indian, Thai and Chinese massage styles and techniques. It is designed to promote general health. This particular tradition isn't as extensive as other forms of massage practiced throughout Thailand. However, it offers its own distinct healing strategies and advantages.
As an Asian massage therapist who worked for six years (and nights) in northern Thailand, I did not observe the widespread usage of "Myrrh" that I have observed in much of the other areas of Thailand. It's possible that the Thai language does not have the ability to correctly translate the term into English. I also spent an extensive amount of time (about two years) in northern Myanmar and I'm aware of a good bit about the general myrrh treatment there. I have seen some changes throughout the years that I believe may be connected to the shift away from myrrh-based healing towards "herbal medicine."
Myrrh isn't found in Thailand's other. This is likely due to the growing acceptance of herbal and natural treatments. Massages in Thailand still use oils, creams, and waxes. This is because of the many messages (masseurs) who are employed to deliver massage services. A majority of Thai massage spas still use oil-based treatments as they are considered "luxurious".
In addition, many massage spas located in northern Thailand have taken on the idea of using aroma therapy and "Oriental herbal medicine." These methods are being used throughout Europe and in the United States and Canada. However, many of the massage spas in Thailand I've visited are not practicing these traditional healing art. It is my opinion that this is due to the fact that these kinds of approaches do not conform to the guidelines of the larger, more conservatively managed massage spas found in northern Thailand.
Traditional Burmese massage is a totally different experience than the westerners I had studied. The style that I would refer to as "Myanma" or "Myrobalan," involves gentle pressure that is applied to certain points in the body. This is mostly done with kneading. This technique of massage involves long strokesthat differ from other Thai massage techniques where the massage practitioner is using both hands. After the massage my skin was relaxed and I was able sleep peacefully.
My research also revealed that the classic Burmese massage is often accompanied with the consumption of a particular herbal mix. The most commonly used ingredients are the following ingredients: Lavan, Brahmi and Mistletoe. While the herbs might vary between locations but the main goal is to give you a general sense of well being. My research showed that massage therapists in northern Thailand make use of Ostrich feathers, ginseng and traditional Burmese methods to aid clients with muscle spasms related to arthritis.
